EAN 2024 | Monitoring biomarkers in Parkinson’s disease

Tiago Outeiro, PhD, University Medical Center Göttingen, Göttingen, Germany, discusses the use of biochemical markers in Parkinson’s disease detection and monitoring. While there have been recent advances in this area, in order to achieve translation to clinical practice, researchers and clinicians would need to trust that they are truly reflecting a known pathological effect of the condition. Ideally, these markers would enable longitudinal detection, which is not currently possible. While the initial aim is to identify pathological alteration as early as possible, another aim is to use these markers to track progression of PD and assess how well treatments are working. This interview took place at the European Academy of Neurology (EAN) Annual Meeting 2024 in Helsinki, Finland.
