Sleep Europe 2026 | Ketamine for cataplexy in narcolepsy type 1: from a single patient to orexin knockout mice

François Ricordeau, University Hospital of Lyon, Lyon, France, discusses how a patient who reported resolution of cataplexy after self-administering ketamine led to the investigation of ketamine in an orexin knockout mouse model of narcolepsy type 1 (NT1). Dr Ricordeau highlights that ketamine reduced the number of cataplexy episodes in mice without affecting sleep, suggesting an effect on cataplexy initiation, possibly through glutamatergic modulation of prefrontal circuits. This interview took place at Sleep Europe 2026 in Maastricht, the Netherlands.
