AAN 2022 | Main challenges in increasing access to mechanical thrombectomy

Dileep Yavagal, MD, University of Miami’s Miller School of Medicine, Miami, FL, discusses the primary challenges of increasing access to mechanical thrombectomy (MT). Dr Yavagal mentions a survey highlighting a country’s income level as a major determinant for MT access. Asides from this, a multivariate analysis also demonstrated that the number of qualified operators and the number of thrombectomy centers also impact the ease of access to MT. Furthermore, access to an existing protocol in helping direct patients from the field to a thrombectomy center is also a highly influential factor. Another determinant is emergency medical services education on large vessel strokes. Dr Yavagal further states that access to MT would increase by knowing these determinants and increasing the associated variables. This interview took place at the American Academy of Neurology Congress 2022 in Seattle, WA.
