AES 2023 | Key factors when selecting anti-seizure medications for genetic epilepsies

Kristen Park, MD, Children’s Hospital Colorado & University of Colorado School of Medicine, Aurora, CO, outlines key factors to consider when selecting antiseizure medications for patients with epilepsy, based on the principles of precision medicine. By tailoring medication choice based on an individual’s genetic makeup, we can optimize seizure control and minimize side effects. Ensuring an accurate diagnosis has been reached is the most important step, as genetic testing results can vary significantly, making interpretation difficult. Once a definitive diagnosis has been determined, physicians must use the details of the patient’s mutation to inform their treatment strategy. For example, a number of genetic epilepsies have mechanisms of disease that exist in both under- and over-active forms, which has significant implications for treatment. Dr Park also notes the importance of optimizing dosing using information available from published literature.
