EAN 2024 | Emerging evidence on gepants and medication overuse headache

Gisela Terwindt, MD, PhD, Leiden University, Leiden, Netherlands, comments on emerging evidence regarding gepants and the occurance of medication overuse headache (MOH). Gepants are promising treatments for both acute and preventive migraine care. Unlike traditional treatments like triptans, gepants appear to have a lower risk of causing MOH, as shown in animal studies. These studies suggest that alodynia—a marker of MOH—is less common with gepants. Prof. Terwindt anticipates that within 5-10 years, gepants could replace triptans, potentially eliminating MOH altogether. This interview took place at the European Academy of Neurology (EAN) Annual Meeting 2024 in Helsinki, Finland.
