EAN 2024 | Menstrual migraine

Gisela Terwindt, MD, PhD, Leiden University, Leiden, Netherlands, discusses the prevalence and characteristics of menstrual migraine, noting that about two-thirds of women experience these migraines during their menstrual cycles. She distinguishes between pure menstrual migraine, which is rare, and menstrual-related migraine, where both perimenstrual and non-perimenstrual migraine attacks are present. Prof. Terwindt highlights that menstrual migraine attacks tend to be longer and more severe, often accompanied by side symptoms like nausea. She also points out the challenges in treatment, particularly the ineffectiveness of triptans during these attacks and the inadequacy of management by healthcare providers. This interview took place at the European Academy of Neurology (EAN) Annual Meeting 2024 in Helsinki, Finland.
