AES 2023 | Identifying epilepsy in patients with dementia

Ifrah Zawar, MD, University of Virginia School of Medicine, Charlottesville, VA, highlights the challenges associated with the co-occurrence of dementia and epilepsy. Identifying seizures in dementia patients poses challenges due to overlapping symptoms, such as episodic confusion, potentially misattributed to dementia. Dr Zawar emphasizes the need to identify risk factors for epilepsy in people with dementia, so that they can be closely monitored to prevent a delay in epilepsy diagnosis. This interview took place during the American Epilepsy Society (AES) 2023 Annual Meeting congress in Orlando, FL.
