GFAP, also called glial fibrillary acidic protein, is a brain-specific protein which is highly prevalent in astrocytes and is released whenever there is damage happening to brain tissue. So in ICH, there is a more rapid release of GFAP into bloodstream due to the rapidly expanding hematoma. And in ischemic stroke, there is a more gradual necrosis.
