EAN 2024 | The potential of circular RNAs as novel biomarkers in Parkinson’s disease

Anastasia Bougea, PhD, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Eginition Hospital, Athens, Greece, comments on the potential of microRNA and circular RNAs as novel biomarkers for Parkinsonian syndrome, particularly in assessing disease severity and distinguishing between atypical and typical forms of the disease. These RNA biomarkers offer advantages over traditional protein biomarkers, such as stability and ease of detection in biological fluids. A recent study published by Dr Bougea’s team identified a panel of five circular RNAs that can discriminate among patients with progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), multiple system atrophy (MSA), and Parkinson’s disease (PD). This interview took place at the European Academy of Neurology (EAN) Annual Meeting 2024 in Helsinki, Finland.
