AAN 2024 | Brain health outcomes in sexual and gender minority groups

Shufan Huo, MD, PhD, Yale School of Medicine, New Haven, CT, discusses her research investigating brain health outcomes in sexual and gender minority groups. Present research indicates that these populations are at increased risk of several diseases but have attracted little medical research. The All of Us research program aims to address this by oversampling of participants from groups who have historically been underrepresented. The study showed that sexual and gender minority individuals were at increased risk of a composite brain health outcome of stroke, dementia, and late-life depression. Assessing individual diseases, transgender women had an increased risk of stroke, persons assigned female at birth were at increased risk of dementia, and participants assigned male at birth were found to be at an increased risk of late life depression. This interview took place at the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) Annual Meeting 2024 in Denver, CO.
