AAN 2024 | Intersectionality in medicine

Intersectionality is a concept for understanding how aspects of a person’s identity combine to create different and overlapping experiences of discrimination and privilege. The interconnectedness of social categorizations, such as race, gender, class, and sexuality, creates interdependent systems of discrimination and thus, everyone has their own unique experiences of discrimination and oppression. Larry Charleston IV, MD, MSc, FAHS, from Michigan State University College of Human Medicine, Grand Rapids, MI discusses the importance of intersectionality in addressing inequalities and discrimination within medicine. This interview took place at the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) Annual Meeting 2024 in Denver, CO.
