AAN 2024 | Managing headache disorders among individuals with cognitive impairment

Larry Charleston, MD, MSc, FAHS, from Michigan State University College of Human Medicine, Grand Rapids, MI, discusses the approach taken to headache medicine in individuals with cognitive or mental impairments, highlighting the key points of Susan Woolner’s talk at AAN 2024 on individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and differences in their perception and expression of pain. These individuals can present with symptoms such as head-banging, repetitive behaviors, and visual disturbances, and it can be difficult to know if these symptoms are attributable to headache. It is necessary for healthcare practitioners to have a deeper understanding of the differences in behaviors exhibited by these individuals. This interview took place at the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) Annual Meeting 2024 in Denver, CO.
