AAN 2024 | Important takeaways in the treatment of super-refractory status epilepticus

Clio Rubinos, MD, MS, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Chapel Hill, NC, reiterates the importance of avoiding underdosing benzodiazepines and second-line medications in patients with super-refractory status epilepticus. She explains that therapeutic goals, including reduction in seizures, will not be reached without the correct dosage being given. She also reinforces that, while SRSE is historically associated with high mortality, even difficult-to-treat patients that may be in a coma for several months can have good outcomes with proper treatment. She highlights the importance of this when considering withdrawal of care. This interview took place at the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) Annual Meeting 2024 in Denver, CO.
