Claudia Altamura, MD, PhD, Campus Bio-Medico, University of Rome, Rome, Italy, discusses the connection between migraine, depression, and anxiety. For a long time, it was believed that patients were depressed because of their migraines. However, new evidence shows that certain drugs can improve both migraine and depressive symptoms. This discovery is significant as it allows healthcare professionals to take a step forward in their approach to treatment. By addressing the migraine first, patients may become more open to discussing their mood and anxiety issues, leading to further improvements in their overall well-being. Dr Altamura emphasizes the importance of using complementary modalities, such as cognitive therapies and meditation, alongside pharmaceutical treatments to provide the best possible care to patients. This interview took place at the European Academy of Neurology (EAN) 2023 Congress in Budapest, Hungary.
