EAN 2021 | Newly developed recommendations for palliative care in MS

Alessandra Solari, MD, Carlo Besta Neurological Institute, Milan, Italy, shares the newly developed EAN guideline on palliative care for advanced multiple sclerosis (MS), developed through collaboration between clinicians and patients, to address to the needs of patients and their families. 34 recommendations were set out, predominantly addressing symptom management. Only one strong recommendation was developed, which was nabiximols treatment for spasticity. Most substantial evidence from the research came from those who were at the earlier stages of the disease. Seven good practice statements were also set out, addressing clinical questions were no evidence for recommendations was found. Dr Solari highlights the importance of an integrative approach towards the treatment of patients with MS, which combines neurology, palliative care and rehabilitation. This interview took place during the European Academy of Neurology 2021 congress.
