Sleep Europe 2026 | What is augmentation in RLS?

Ambra Stefani, MD, PhD, Medical University of Innsbruck, Innsbruck, Austria, discusses the concept of augmentation in patients with restless legs syndrome (RLS), which is a worsening of symptoms related to dopaminergic treatments. Dr Stefani highlights that augmentation leads to more severe symptoms that can start earlier in the day, contrary to the typical evening and nighttime pattern of RLS, and that treating augmentation is challenging as it often requires washing out the medication. This interview took place at Sleep Europe 2026, which was held in Maastricht, Netherlands.
