Sleep Europe 2026 | iRBD: the borderlands from prodromal RBD to phenoconversion to synucleinopathy

Ambra Stefani, MD, PhD, Medical University of Innsbruck, Innsbruck, Austria, discusses the borderlands of isolated REM sleep behavior disorder (iRBD), from symptom onset to phenoconversion to manifest synucleinopathy. Dr Stefani explains that signs and symptoms can appear before diagnostic criteria for iRBD are met, a phase termed prodromal RBD that is starting to be defined but requires more data. At the other end, transition to synucleinopathy is not always clear-cut, and symptom fluctuations can make it difficult to identify the precise time of phenoconversion. This interview took place at Sleep Europe 2026 in Maastricht, the Netherlands.
