Well, we need to think that sleep is a vital pillar for brain health, for health in general. It is vital as much as breathing, as much as drinking, as much as eating. So human beings and living beings, if they don’t sleep, they die. So this is why sleep is so important we need to think about sleep and the sleep disorders are really common in the general population in adults and in childhood so we need to think about the existence of sleep disorder because often a patient with a neurological disorder they don’t say that they suffer from sleep disorder because they think and they believe that the first neurological disorder that they have and the reason that they seek medical attention is more important. And in a sense it is because it is the way that they reach the doctors but if we manage to handle also sleep disorder as neurologists we manage to improve the quality of life of patients. The first thing is that you need to think about it as said people often do not tell the doctors that they have sleep problems so we need to think that maybe there may be a sleep problem, a sleep disorder. So we need to ask whether they feel sleepy during the day or whether they have trouble sleeping during the night or even if they act weird during the night, they do paroxysmal episodes during the night. So we need to do what medical doctors do. We need to speak with patients, try to understand if there is something wrong with the sleep-wake cycle and we have several questionnaires that can be used that are easy to use and in this way we can suspect and diagnose efficiently sleep disorder and then eventually treat them.
