EAN 2024 | Long-term impact of PKU and dietary management

Bernadette Sheehan Gilroy, PhD candidate and rare disease advocate, Munster Technological University, Kerry, Ireland, explains that while dietary intervention is highly effective at treating phenylketonuria (PKA) in most, it is not without issues. The dietary intervention has been linked to disturbances in the renal, cardiovascular and visual systems in adult patients. Although the long-term results have been mixed amongst patients with PKU, Ms Sheehan Gilroy emphasizes the need for further research. More specifically, research is needed to understand how differences in patient characterstics influence the outcomes of dietary intervention. This interview took place at the European Academy of Neurology (EAN) Annual Meeting 2024 in Helsinki, Finland.
