WSC 2023 | Broadening eligibility for EVT in acute ischemic stroke

Aristeidis Katsanos, MD, PhD, McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, discusses the practical implications of broad implementation of large core stroke thrombectomy. The success of endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) in clinical trials has led to the broadening of eligibility criteria, making this procedure more widely used. This could pose a challenge if resources and capacity of healthcare providers cannot uphold the high demands for EVT. Additionally, ESCAPE-MeVO (NCT05151172) and DISTAL (NCT05029414) are ongoing trials to gain further data on the benefits of EVT for medium vessel occlusion stroke. If positive, these trials will likely lead to even broader implementation of EVT for acute ischemic stroke treatment. This interview took place at the World Stroke Congress (WSC) 2023 in Toronto, Canada.
