AES 2023 | Progress in the treatment of neonatal seizures

Elissa Yozawitz, MD, FAES, Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Bronx, NY, gives an update on the progress that is being made in the treatment of neonatal seizures. Phenobarbital is currently the gold standard for frontline treatment, while the optimal second-line treatment remains undecided, with levetiracetam, fosphenytoin, and lidocaine all showing potential efficacy. Dr Yozawitz introduces an ongoing multicenter trial aimed at determining the most effective second-line treatment for neonatal seizures. This interview took place during the American Epilepsy Society (AES) 2023 Annual Meeting congress in Orlando, FL.
