SLEEP 2026 | Reflecting on the SURMOUNT-OSA trial and the integration of GLP-1 agonists into OSA treatment

Atul Malhotra, MD, University of California San Diego, San Diego, CA, discusses the key findings from the SURMOUNT-OSA trial (NCT05412004) that supported the approval of tirzepatide for obstructive sleep apnea in adults with obesity. Dr Malhotra highlights that the study led to FDA approval of tirzepatide for this indication in December 2024, and notes that while CPAP remains the first-line treatment, tirzepatide is a promising adjunctive therapy or alternative for patients who cannot tolerate CPAP. This interview took place at the 40th annual meeting of the Associated Professional Sleep Societies (APSS) in Baltimore, MD.
