IEC 2023 | Steps towards optimal therapy for patients with rare epilepsies

Christian Brandt, MD, Bielefeld University Medical School, Bielefeld, Germany, considers the best approach to providing quality care to patients with rare diseases associated with epilepsy, the prevalence of which is not matched by the treatment option availability. To establish individualized treatment, clinical examinations should be holistic, considering EEG and MRI recordings, patients’ history, and genetic diagnostics. Dr Brandt touches on his research with patients with a rare disease associated with epilepsy and comorbid intellectual disabilities, a neglected patient population. Further research will enhance our understanding of the etiology of rare diseases, and therefore patient-specific treatment. This interview took place at the International Epilepsy Congress (IEC) 2023 in Dublin, Ireland.
