Sait Ashina, MD, Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA, talks on rates and predictors of relapse in medication overuse headache (MOH). Discontinuation or reduction of the overused medication to fewer than 2 days/week is an effective treatment strategy, yet the 1-year relapse rate for patients with MOH undergoing drug withdrawal treatment is approximately 30%. The risk factors for MOH relapse include the type and duration of the primary headache, the type of pain reliever used after withdrawal, and the headache frequency after drug withdrawal. This interview took place during the 7th European Headache Congress (EHC) 2023.
