AAN 2024 | A biopsychosocial model for FMD diagnosis

Sarah Lidstone, MD, PhD, from Toronto Western Hospital and the University of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, describes the symptoms associated with functional movement disorder (FMD), a subtype of functional neurological disorder (FND). Patients with FMD commonly present with difficulties in movement, dystonia, gait disorders, and tremors. Dr Lidstone highlights that FND is the second most common reason patients visit a neurologist behind migraines and promotes the use of a biopsychosocial model when dealing with FMD. This considers the psychological and social factors that may be at play, as well as biological factors. It is important to recognize a patient’s vulnerabilities to developing the disorder and perpetuating factors such as ongoing stress and comorbid physical symptoms. This interview took place at the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) Annual Meeting 2024 in Denver, CO.
