ECTRIMS 2023 | Influence of metabolites on inflammation and dietary implications

André Ortlieb Guerreiro Cacais, PhD, Karolinska Institute, Solna, Sweden, delves into the multifaceted role of metabolites, such as short-chain fatty acids from gut bacteria and ketone bodies from dietary restrictions, in modulating inflammation. While it’s tempting to draw attention-grabbing conclusions about dietary adjustments, especially protein intake, to influence inflammation, Dr Ortlieb Guerreiro Cacais cautions against such claims without comprehensive understanding. Despite the ability to increase valine by diet, the nuances of its effects on various immune cells during homeostasis and inflammation remain to be fully elucidated. More in-depth studies are imperative for informed dietary recommendations or interventions. This interview took place at the European Committee for Treatment and Research in Multiple Sclerosis (ECTRIMS) Congress 2023 in Milan, Italy.
