AES 2022 | Precision medicine approaches to epilepsy: exploring treatment options

Sattar Khoshkhoo, MD, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA, discusses the challenges and potential of precision medicine in the early stages of treating neurologic diseases, particularly epilepsy. Frequently the treatment is not offered until several years into the individual’s life, resulting in individuals living with the consequences of genetic variants for many years. Different approaches are being investigated, including editing the variants, modulating protein expression, and targeting specific signaling mechanisms. Dr Khoshkhoo emphasizes that there is no one-size-fits-all approach and that it takes time to determine the most effective treatments. This interview took place at the American Epilepsy Society (AES) Annual Meeting 2022 in Nashville, TN.
