Oscar Gershanik, MD, Favaloro University, Buenos Aires, Argentina, addresses what is needed to improve the classification of patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD) and other parkinsonian syndromes. The lack of objective, specific biomarkers for the differential diagnosis of PD means that patients are typically diagnosed using clinically defined criteria. However, these clinical features are not always specific to one syndrome and patients do not always present with all features used to define a particular parkinsonian syndrome. Developing diagnostic tests that can distinguish PD from other forms of parkinsonism is an urgent need. This interview took place during the 2021 International Congress of Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorders.
