MDS 2021 | What is LARGE-PD? Aims, genetic discoveries, and new projects

Ignacio Mata, PhD, Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland, OH, talks on the efforts of LARGE-PD (The Latin American Research consortium on the GEnetics of Parkinson’s Disease). The initiative was established in 2005 as a multicenter collaboration across Latin America, aiming to increase the knowledge about PD in these countries. Dr Mata serves as coordinator for the consortium, ensuring standardized procedures and quality control across all centers. In 2016, the first genome wide association study (GWAS) was conducted using LARGE-PD data. The initiative is continuing to recruit new participants, including a new cohort of 10,000 Latinos in the US. Dr Mata also discusses efforts to collect samples from multiplex PD families to identify new PD genes. This interview took place during the 2021 International Congress of Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorders.
