Shane Arsenault, MD, Memorial University of Newfoundland, St. John’s, Canada, shares the latest from his work looking at the relationship between neurofilament light chain (NfL) levels and CSF/plasma immune cell levels in patients with relasping-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS). The study demonstrated significnat inclreases in T- and B-cell numbers in CSF obtained from paitents with RRMS, compared to controls. Notably, CSF NfL levels psotively correlated with CSF B cells and NK cells, while IgG index levels correlated with CSF NfL and all immune cell subsets measured. Treatment with disease-modifying therapies resulted in immune cell numbers and NfL returning to levels similar to controls. These data suggest that inflammatory measures can provide valuable insights into DMT effectiveness, potentially guiding treatment strategies upfront. This interview took place at the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) Annual Meeting 2024 in Denver, CO.
