MDS 2023 | The importance of clinical trials in generating evidence for safe and effective therapies

Joaquim Ferreira, MD, PhD, University of Lisbon, Lisbon, Portugal, emphasizes the significance of clinical trials in healthcare. Clinical trials are essential to ensure treatments are brought to market safely and effectively. By developing studies that demonstrate the desired outcomes, clinical trials generate evidence regarding the efficacy of pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions. Additionally, it has been shown that centers conducting more trials often have better patient outcomes, improving overall care. To truly understand clinical trials, Prof. Ferreira suggests actively participating as an investigator and being involved in the design process. He believes that this firsthand experience contributes to scientific advancement and the availability of medicines for patients. Any medical professional benefits from understanding clinical trial methodology, as it enhances their knowledge and ability to provide better care. This interview took place at the 2023 International Congress of Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorders in Copenhagen, Denmark.
