ESOC 2024 | Blood biomarkers for stroke diagnosis and secondary prevention

Mira Katan, MD, MSc, FESO, University Hospital and University of Basel, Basel, Switzerland, discusses various biomarkers that could aid in diagnosing stroke etiology and the individualization of secondary prevention strategies. Efforts are underway to identify blood biomarkers which reflect the body’s response to the damage caused by the different types of stroke.
Dr Katan highlights the potential of lipoprotein(a) as a blood biomarker for large artery atherosclerosis stroke etiology. In a recent large, observational study, lipoprotein(a) was shown to be linked to large vessel strokes and recurrent strokes, particularly within younger individuals. She emphasizes the importance of understanding stroke biology and mechanisms to improve targeted secondary prevention strategies. This interview took place at the 10th European Stroke Organisation Conference (ESOC) 2024 in Basel, Switzerland.
