ESOC 2024 | Examining pre-hospital workflows for stroke diagnosis

Nyika Kruyt, MD, PhD, Leiden University Medical Centre, Leiden, Netherlands, highlights the importance of improving pre-hospital workflows. The Leiden Prehospital Stroke Study investigated several clinical scales to aid paramedics in large vessel occlusion detection and thus, optimize the allocation of care. It was found that around 30-40 percent of patients were wrongly diagnosed as stroke, consequently placing unnecessary stress on the emergency department resources. Further research is needed to prospectively examine the available pre-hospital scales to see which perform best and how their use can be improved. This interview took place at the 10th European Stroke Organisation Conference (ESOC) 2024 in Basel, Switzerland.
