EAN 2024 | Addressing depression in epilepsy

Elinor Ben-Menachem, MD, PhD, University of Gothenburg, Gothenburg, Sweden, explains the connection between epilepsy and depression. In many cases, patients with epilepsy also present with depression, which can significantly impact their quality of life and complicate management. HCPs are often hesitant to prescribe antidepressants due to the belief that these can increase the frequency of seizures; however, findings indicate that antidepressants can be beneficial to reduce seizures. Prof. Ben-Menachem highlights the lack of psychiatrists willing to work with epileptic patients and the challenges this can create for neurologists. This interview took place at the European Academy of Neurology (EAN) Annual Meeting 2024 in Helsinki, Finland.
