Academic History

Marcello Moccia, MD, PhD, is a Consultant Neurologist at the Department of Neuroscience, University of Naples Federico II, Naples, Italy, and Researcher at the NMR Research Unit, Queen Square Multiple Sclerosis Centre, UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology, London, UK. He obtained his Medical Degree in 2010 and completed his Neurology training in 2016 at the University of Naples Federico II, where he also pursued a PhD in Neuroscience.

Dr Moccia’s research focuses on the clinical and biological characterization of multiple sclerosis (MS), with a particular interest in neurodegeneration, neuroimaging, and fluid biomarkers. He has published extensively on topics such as predictors of disease progression, treatment adherence, and the use of neurofilament light chain as a biomarker of axonal injury. His work also explores the refinement and implementation of diagnostic criteria for MS, as well as the impact of comorbidities and patient-reported outcomes on disease management.

Speaking on Advances in MS Diagnosis, Biomarkers, and Patient-Centered Care

Dr Moccia’s presentations cover the latest updates to the McDonald diagnostic criteria for MS, including the incorporation of paraclinical tests and strategies for global implementation. He also discusses emerging research on plasma neurofilament light chain as a biomarker of neuroaxonal loss and its association with invisible symptoms and patient-reported outcomes.
