Academic History
Diego García-Borreguero, MD, PhD, is Director of the Sleep Research Institute in Madrid, Spain. Prof. García-Borreguero earned his medical degree from the University of Navarra and completed residency training in Neurology and Psychiatry at the Max Planck Institute in Munich, Germany, where he also conducted research in neuropharmacology. He obtained his PhD from the University of Munich with distinction.
Following his doctoral training, Prof. García-Borreguero pursued advanced fellowships in Sleep Medicine and Sleep Research at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, as well as additional training in the United States. From 1995 to 2005, he led the Sleep Unit at Fundación Jiménez Díaz, developing it into one of Spain’s most comprehensive centers for sleep disorders research and clinical care. Since 2005, he has directed the Sleep Research Institute, where he continues to advance both clinical practice and research in neurological sleep disorders.
Prof. García-Borreguero has held numerous leadership roles in international sleep medicine organizations. He served as Secretary of the European Sleep Research Society (ESRS) Board from 2004 to 2008 and currently contributes to the ESRS Sleep Medicine Committee and co-chairs the ESRS-EU Committee. He is a past president of the Spanish Sleep Society and has chaired the International Restless Legs Syndrome Study Group since 2011. He is also an elected Fellow of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.

Prof. García-Borreguero is internationally recognized as one of the leading experts in restless legs syndrome and movement disorders during sleep. His research focuses on circadian rhythms, dopaminergic augmentation, and long-term treatment outcomes, contributing to improved understanding and management of these conditions. Through his work, he has helped shape clinical approaches to sleep-related neurological disorders and hypersomnias.
In addition to his research, Prof. García-Borreguero is an active educator and speaker, delivering lectures and courses across Europe, the United States, and Asia. He publishes extensively in international journals and is widely regarded as a key voice in advancing awareness and clinical expertise in sleep medicine.
