Diana Aguiar de Sousa
Academic History
Diana Aguiar de Sousa, MD, PhD, is a Neurologist at the Cerebrovascular Diseases Unit of the Central Lisbon University Hospital Center, Assistant Professor at the University of Lisbon, and researcher at the Gulbenkian Institute for Molecular Medicine (GIMM), Lisbon, Portugal. She completed her Masters in Medicine at Lisbon School of Medicine in 2010, and went on to earn her PhD in Neurology in 2020, focusing on cerebral venous thrombosis.
Dr Aguiar de Sousa is actively involved in academic teaching and supervision, serving as supervisor of master’s and doctoral theses, and as faculty on postgraduate and specialist courses across Europe, including the European Stroke Organisation (ESO) Summer and Winter Schools and the University of Bern’s Master in Stroke program.
She is Co-Chair of the ESO Guideline Board, and has been a member of the ESO Executive Committee and Chair of the ESO Young Stroke Physicians and Researchers Committee. She also serves on the Steering Committee for the European Action Plan for Stroke and the Clinical Research Subcommittee of the American Academy of Neurology. In Portugal, she sits on the board of the Portuguese Stroke Society and is Vice-President of the Sociedade Portuguesa do Acidente Vascular Cerebral (SPAVC).
Her editorial contributions include serving as Assistant Editor for Stroke (AHA/ASA), Editorial Board member of the European Stroke Journal and International Journal of Stroke, and Guest Editor for Current Opinion in Neurology. She has authored or co-authored over 150 publications and book chapters, with a focus on cerebral venous thrombosis, stroke in young and pregnant patients, and the implementation of stroke care.
