Academic History
Ambra Stefani, MD, PhD, is a Neurologist at the Medical University of Innsbruck, Austria, specializing in sleep medicine. Her research career has focused on sleep and neurodegeneration.
In 2017, Dr Stefani was awarded the Expert Somnologist certification by the European Sleep Research Society, recognizing her expertise in sleep medicine. She completed her PhD in neuroscience at the Medical University of Innsbruck, where she also trained in neurology as part of her residency. Dr Stefani currently holds the role of Secretary for both the International REM Sleep Behavior Disorder Study Group and the European Restless Legs Syndrome Study Group.
Among her notable achievements, Dr Stefani led a study analyzing olfactory mucosa for pathologic α-synuclein using real-time quaking-induced conversion in isolated REM sleep behavior disorder. Additionally, she was awarded the Max Kade Fellowship, which supports her current research on REM sleep behavior disorder at the Neurological Clinical Research Institute, Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, MA.
Dr Stefani’s contributions to the field are reflected in her record of over 100 peer-reviewed publications, advancing the understanding of sleep disorders and their relation to neurodegeneration.
Speaking on sleep disorders and neurodegeneration
Dr Stefani’s research interests focus on neurodegeneration in sleep disorders, particularly isolated REM sleep behavior disorder and restless legs syndrome (RLS). She specializes in the video-polysomnographic characterization of motor phenomena during sleep, with a goal to better understand the pathophysiology of these disorders.
