EAN 2024 | Bridging the gap: enhancing sleep medicine in primary care settings

Marina Tüzün, MD, PhD, Inselspital, Bern University Hospital, University of Bern, Bern, Switzerland, emphasizes the critical role of primary care providers in addressing sleep disturbances, noting that many patients initially consult GPs or pharmacists for these issues. She highlights the common pitfalls of underestimating sleep problems and the tendency for some GPs to prescribe medications without proper evaluation. To improve patient care, Dr Tüzün discusses The Swiss Sleep House Bern (SSHB) project designed to bridge the gap between primary care providers and specialists, facilitating rapid and accessible triage and first-level management of sleep complaints. This initiative aims to provide outpatient diagnostic services, allowing patients to receive care more efficiently and reducing wait times for specialized treatment, as well as providing education. This interview took place at the European Academy of Neurology (EAN) Annual Meeting 2024 in Helsinki, Finland.
