ESOC 2024 | Guidelines for basilar artery occlusion management

Wim H. van Zwam, MD, Maastricht University Medical Center, Maastricht, Netherlands, shares an overview of the newly published ESO-ESMINT guideline on acute management of basilar artery occlusion. Based on several recent trials, endovascular treatment can be recommended for basilar artery occlusion. However, due to the limitations of the trials, only patients with severe neurological deficits can be recommended endovascular treatment. Dr van Zwam notes the treatment’s higher effectiveness in proximal occlusions and emphasizes the need for further research, particularly on IV treatment and other posterior circulation vessels. This interview took place at the 10th European Stroke Organisation Conference (ESOC) 2024 in Basel, Switzerland.
