ESOC 2024 | ESO guideline on lacunar ischemic stroke

Joanna M Wardlaw, CBE, MD, FCRP, FRSE, FMedSci, University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh, Scotland, UK, discusses the newly published European Stroke Organization (ESO) guideline focusing on clinically evident lacunar ischemic stroke, which builds on a 2022 guideline about covert small vessel disease. This update examines acute treatments and long-term secondary prevention strategies, noting challenges due to limited data on lacunar stroke in clinical trials. Key recommendations include intravenous alteplase, antiplatelet drugs and lifestyle modifications such as smoking cessation and exercise. The guideline also highlights emerging novel treatments but emphasizes the need for further research. This interview took place at the 10th European Stroke Organisation Conference (ESOC) 2024 in Basel, Switzerland.
