Samuel Dickson, PhD, Pentara Corporation, Millcreek, UT, discusses research into the use of Celeste (previously Spectramax) light therapy to treat Parkinson’s disease. The therapeutic light device combines specific wavelengths of light that are most efficient in stimulating melanopsin containing retinal ganglion cells (mRGCs), with the aim of restoring melanopsin signaling and circadian function. Proof-of-concept studies have shown improvements in both motor and non-motor function and quality of life among patients given the light therapy. A Phase III pivotal trial in 300 patients is underway, with improved remote assessment technologies enabling improved inclusion.
