AAN 2024 | Treatment advances in pediatric migraine

Scott Rosenthal, MD, MS, University of Colorado School of Medicine and Children’s Hospital Colorado, Aurora, CO, highlights novel treatment modalities and emerging technologies for the management of pediatric migraine. Injectable calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) are FDA approved for preventive migraine treatment in adults. Trials are still in progress for their use in pediatrics, but results from off-label usage are promising, with minimal side effects seen. A similar story is seen with rescue therapies; gepants are undergoing clinical trials for use in children after being approved for adults, and off-label usage has also been seen to yield positive results. Dr Rosenthal also discusses the growing usage of devices within pediatric headache, with Nerivio, a vagal nerve stimulator, one commonly used FDA-approved device. This interview took place at the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) Annual Meeting 2024 in Denver, CO.
