ESOC 2024 | The promise of carotid filters as a stroke prevention technique

Jaime Masjuan, MD, PhD, from The Hospital Universitario Ramón y Cajal, Madrid, Spain, discusses the use of carotid filters, an emerging technique in stroke prevention therapy for patients with atrial fibrillation. These filters are implanted in the common carotid arteries to prevent large vessel occlusion strokes. There are ongoing trials focusing on carotid filters with promising preliminary results, and Dr Masjuan expresses his hope that in the future, larger Phase II trials can be conducted to validate this treatment in preventing breakthrough strokes in patients with atrial fibrillation. This interview took place at the 10th European Stroke Organisation Conference (ESOC) 2024 in Basel, Switzerland.
