ESOC 2024 | The debate on the use of EVT for low NIHSS strokes

Wim H. van Zwam, MD, from Maastricht University Medical Center, Maastricht, Netherlands, weighs in on the debate regarding the use of endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) for stroke patients with low NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) scores. He highlights that the evidence for treatment is still of low quality and further research in this area is required. He advocates for quick action, especially for patients presenting with large vessel occlusions and those with initially severe symptoms that appear to improve, as he believes early intervention is likely to prevent further deterioration. As deterioration over time has shown to be common in these cases, it is possible that delaying treatment may result in further complications and a greater risk of harm to the patient. This interview took place at the 10th European Stroke Organisation Conference (ESOC) 2024 in Basel, Switzerland.
