Valeria Caso, MD, PhD, FESO, from Santa Maria della Misericordia Hospital, University of Perugia, Perugia, Italy, discusses the key areas that lack data regarding the management of patent foramen ovale (PFO) after stroke. More evidence is needed on the benefits of PFO closure in patients over 60, as growing observational data suggests that there may be a benefit, particularly in patients in good physical condition. There is also a need for studies observing patients under the age of 18. Validation of novel diagnostic techniques are also a research focus, including CT angiography and cardiac MRI. This interview was conducted at the 10th European Stroke Organisation Conference (ESOC) 2024 in Basel, Switzerland.
