AAN 2024 | Comparing hormonal exposure in late-onset and early-onset Parkinson’s disease

Gaia Patanè, MD, University of Bologna, Bologna, Italy, & Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN, presents a study comparing hormonal exposure in women with early-onset Parkinson’s disease (EOPD) to those with late-onset Parkinson’s disease (LOPD) and EOPD-matched unaffected controls. The study revealed no significant differences between EOPD and controls. However, women with LOPD were less likely to have used hormonal contraception, and more likely to have experienced menopause, oophorectomy, and perimenopausal treatment. Dr Patanè hypothesizes that these differences are likely due to the age gap between the two cohorts, rather than an explanation for the different manifestations of the disease. This interview took place at the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) Annual Meeting 2024 in Denver, CO.
