EAN 2023 | REM sleep behavior disorder: an early indicator of Parkinson’s disease

Carlo Colosimo, MD, FEAN, Santa Maria University Hospital, Terni, Italy, delves into the significance of REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD) as an early indicator of pre-motor Parkinson’s disease and other synucleinopathies such as multiple system atrophy and dementia with Lewy bodies. With mounting evidence pointing to the fact that a majority of those with RBD eventually develop one of these degenerative disorders, the spotlight is on early identification. The need for swift recognition of RBD in the aging population becomes pivotal, especially as it offers an avenue for potential novel interventional therapies. While current trials focus on those with established Parkinson’s disease, future studies might pivot towards individuals exhibiting early markers, like RBD. This interview took place at the European Academy of Neurology (EAN) 2023 Congress in Budapest, Hungary.
