AAN 2023 | Circadian medicine: modifying the circadian rhythm to treat disease

Michelle Jonelis, MD, Redwood Pulmonary Medical Associates, Redwood City, CA, discusses circadian medicine – a new area of sleep medicine that focuses on enhancing or modifying circadian rhythms to improve overall health. Treatment often involves optimization of zeitgebers, such as temperature and light exposure. Patients with higher neurological dysfunction require more external cues to optimize their circadian rhythm. Circadian medicine can be used for the treatment of diseases such as dementia, migraines, cluster headaches, insomnia, hypersomnia, and sleep apnea. This interview took place at the American Academy of Neurology Annual Meeting 2023 in Boston, MA.
