The cause of primary headaches are typically not known and include migraines, tension headaches and cluster headaches. Secondary headaches consist of intracranial hypertension, infection, and inflammation. Morris Levin, MD, University of California, San Francisco, CA, discusses current strategies to diagnose the two types of headaches. The International Classification of Headache Disorders (ICHD) is a hierarchical system that enables the classification headache and whilst some primary headaches may have overlapping characteristics, the ICHD is generally a convenient tool to ascertain the correct treatment regimen for patients.
